Hi! I’m Nikia Newman owner, designer, and sewist of Beholi. It would be nice to tell you that I have been sewing since the age of 2, or made clothes for everybody on my block by the age of 12, but that is not at all my story. At age 12, being able to thread a needle and do a basic stitch was sewing enough for me.
Okay, I know that you are anxious to know, “why Beholi? Could she really be THAT shallow? Naming her faith-inspired business, "BE HOLY?" There was actually a little more thought put into it. A friend and I were led by God to Exodus 31. In this chapter, God chose two men named Bezalel and Aholiab and imparted them with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of all kinds of crafts to be able to carry out the vision of the tabernacle. So, there we were, writing on post-it notes, finding a way to combine the two names. After much struggle, we took the “BE” from Bezalel and the “HOLI” from Aholiab and thus, “Beholi” was conceived.
Why start my own business you ask? In 2010 I was laid off from my job of 4 years. It had a negative impact on my life financially, but I honestly looked at it as an opportunity to do something that I was passionate about. I began volunteering at a local sewing studio in exchange for sewing lessons. I now realize that this point of my life was helping to shape my vision to become a entrepreneur. I had the amazing opportunity to help the studio make clothing for a local boutique in Washington, DC. I was also offered the chance to actually sell some of my very own creations in that very same boutique.
I am certain Beholi will provide uniqueness and variety. You will find anything from accessories, and clothing, to worship attire, praise and worship banners, and flags. That is the freshness of creativity. There is nothing deep about my creative inspiration; I don’t travel the world or go stare at nature for inspiration. I get this compelling drive to create and I pray and ask for creativity to manifest, and begin the process.
I did not start sewing to become a designer. I just like to sew. People, including strangers, began to recognize me as a designer and I thought, “wow, who knew?” That being said, there are not many accomplishments as a designer under my belt. I have sold my handbags out of a local boutique, on Etsy, and nowI display my items at various events serving as a vendor. I know that the launching of this site will definitely go on the list of accomplishments.
Curiosity is the key to my motivation at this point. To discover the “what if's” or the “could be"s” of the process, keeps me motivated. Just to really see how far Beholi can go. I have an enormous vision for Beholi and sharing my products on my very own website is the beginning of the vision. I would love to one day own a multi-functional boutique offering sewing lessons, alterations, shopping, and a large studio that would replace my current small dining room studio in my two bedroom apartment.
